Park Time

Joey is getting so big now! These past few months, he's learned to really appreciate the park and playground equipment (besides just the swing). We went to a particularly beautiful park in Pennsylvania the last time we were up visiting Brian's parents (Caledonia State Park). Joey had lots of fun on their playground.

What is it about boys and steering wheels?

Down slide number 1 . . . it was slightly faster than Joey anticipated.

Now for slide #2 . . . he wanted Grandpa up there with him, even though he refused any and all help.

Slide #3 was very slow . . . so slow in fact, I was able to take multiple pictures of him coming down. He actually had to use his feet to propel himself down the slide.

And just when you thought you were done with slides, MORE SLIDES!

Yes, our son loves slides! On the other side of the playset were more slides. He didn't like these quite as much, though.

The other nice part of Caledonia is the creek. Joey loved this creek when we went up in July. However, it was considerably colder this time around. Too cold for even our little fish.

Firsts

Kate started solid foods (cereal) about 3 weeks ago. She LOVES it! Most days I can't feed it to her fast enough, so she cries. Here are some pictures of her first bite of cereal.

Beach Trip

One of the many advantages to having Brian home all the time now is that we can go on vacation, something that was almost impossible to do while he was working for his firm. We decided to take advantage of our time off and go see my family for a few days. They live only an hour from the beautiful NC coast, which we had to take advantage of while we were there. We spent a morning enjoying Topsail Beach, after which the kids were more than ready to take naps in the car on the way back.

Joey wasn't too sure about the beach . . . he hadn't been since Hawaii last summer. I think he prefers the pool for now.

Birthday Boy

Joey had his 2nd birthday on July 25th. Where did the time go? We celebrated in grand style starting out with chocolate chip pancakes for breakfast, followed by a trip to the park. After his nap, we had his birthday party. Joey, being a typical 2 year old, refused to try any birthday cake. But he had fun opening his presents and playing with his grandparents and friends.

Trip to the Zoo

We went to the NC Zoo in Asheboro on Memorial Day with some friends of ours. We had a great time, even if was VERY hot and humid. I know, what else can you expect in late May in NC. The zoo is divided up onto two sections - North America and Africa. We started out in North America.

Joey spent most of the time traveling like this, even though we brought the stroller. Poor Brian! But he definitely got some exercise.

We were exhausted by this point (it was over 5 miles one way and had taken about 3-4 hours), so we decided to call it a day. We plan to go back some time in July, so hopefully we'll have more Africa pictures then.

Sleeping Beauty

We recently took a trip down to Mt. Olive to see my parents while Brian slaved away at work. Kate had yet to meet my dad or grandmother. She would fall asleep pretty much anywhere while we were down there (I guess all the excitement was tiring). This is her asleep on the floor in the family room at my parents'.

I love how one foot is raised. I'm pretty sure the other one is too, its just hidden in her pants.

I know I'm biased, but isn't she just beautiful!

We brought Joey to the hospital the day after Kate was born to meet her (plus I really missed my little guy). He was NOT impressed.

We tried to get him to come over and see me, but he was having none of that.

Eventually, we convinced him to come over with Brian, and he would look at her only while sitting on Daddy's lap. While he hasn't completely come to love her yet, he does try to reach out and touch her from time to time. And as long as he gets his own Mommy time, he can handle having her around.

Chocolate Chip Pancakes

Joey's favorite food right now is pancakes. We will occasionally go to IHOP for dinner, and he can take down close to 2 pancakes plus lots of orange juice. So, one Saturday morning, I decided to make him as happy as he could be by combining his two favorite things . . . chocolate and pancakes. Of course, it was a big hit. These pictures really don't do justice to just how messy he got. We had to immediately follow breakfast with a trip to the bathtub, which of course, Joey didn't mind at all. It was probably his favorite weekend yet!

As you can see, he mostly used his hands to eat.

But we are working on the fine art of using a fork. He's pretty good with it. But hands are WAY more fun!

Daddy Snuggles

I'm not the only recipient of Joey's affection. He LOVES to cuddle with Brian, especially when he gets home from work. As soon as Joey hears the garage door open, he runs to the stairs to see Brian come in. Then they usually both sit on the couch and watch a little TV while I try to get dinner ready. Its so cute!

Sometimes, though, Joey would rather lay on the couch with Brian.

Notice how even though he's laying down, some part of him has to be touching Brian (frequently his feet). So cute!!
And yes, he does usually wear a complete outfit, but for some reason, all the pictures I get of him are without at least 1 article of clothing.

Mommy Love

The older Joey gets, the more cuddly he becomes. He loves to watch Sesame Street while sitting on my lap or snuggling with me. He's even learned to pat your back when giving hugs. Its the most precious thing in the world, and will of course get him out of trouble every time.

One day he was being particularly cuddly. Of course I didn't mind. However, Joey's soon to be sister did not seem to be too pleased about it. She kept kicking his head, since he was using my stomach as a pillow. So, the poor little boy had to move his head to the side so he wouldn't get hit. I'm starting to get a little worried about those two . . . She's not even here yet, but they're already fighting!

Toddler Bed

With the arrival of our little girl quickly approaching (and since Joey was starting to outgrow the crib), we decided to make the transition for Joey from crib to toddler bed.
He was not at all pleased with this development at first. He absolutely adored the crib . . . but his legs kept getting caught in the rails during the middle of the night. The first few nights he cried himself to sleep (which he never does), but actually stayed in the bed. Apparently he didn't realize he could get out by himself. After 2 days, though, he figured it all out, and instead of napping, he would play. I hoped he would get tired and fall asleep after a while, but some days he didn't. Other days, he would fall asleep on the floor, which just doesn't make for good sleep. And of course, he rolled out of the bed on a few nights. But, after about a week, he got used to it. Now he LOVES his bed. He giggles and climbs in every time we got into the room, not just with naps or bedtime. And he stays in the bed for naps, and only gets out and plays after he wakes up. We're really glad that battle is over!

Snow Day!

We had snow today for the first time this winter. It didn't end up amounting to too much (at most a couple of inches), but it covered the ground and was very beautiful. Joey was able to see snow for the second time in his life, although the first time didn't even cover the ground, and he was too young to remember it. So, we got all bundled up and went outside to play.

Joey LOVES to play on our computer. We don't love it quite as much, since he has an uncanny ability to hit some key that makes the computer do something crazy you've never seen it do before. But, every time he goes in our bedroom, he wants to play on it.

We were able to spend New Years in Pennsylvania. Joey, as always, loved being the center of attention and we all had lots of fun with the second round of Christmas presents.

Christmas part 1

We spent Christmas in Mt. Olive this year, and Joey loved being the center of attention. He got to see his Uncle Kit for the first time in a year, as well as Aunt Amanda and Uncle Josh a few days after Christmas. He was excited Christmas morning to see all the presents, although at first, he was more excited to see the piano.

Playground

Now that Joey's older, he LOVES the playground. His favorite thing in the whole wide world is a swing. He would swing for hours if we let him. I actually tried to see how long it took before he got tired of it one day, and I gave up after an hour.

Occasionally Joey will get off the swings, though.

Botanical Gardens

Joey, Brian, Grandma, Grandpa, and I all went to the botanical gardens in Belmont, NC recently. We were very impressed by how beautiful they were, even in late fall.

We started off in the Butterfly House

Joey "helped" Grandma push the stroller from time to time, since he would hate for her to get tired.

After the Butterfly House, we went outside to see the rest of the gardens. Joey fell in love with fountains! We could barely keep him out of them.

Joey liked mud puddles too, although he definitely preferred fountains.

Joey was a ninja for Halloween. Brian's parents went with us to Trunk or Treat at our church. Joey had so much fun looking at all the other kids and, after watching the big kids, figured out how to run.

After all the time spent in Hawaii trying to catch a chicken, Joey was finally able to come face to face with some. We took him to my parent's chicken houses where new baby chicks had just arrived. At first, he wasn't too sure what to think of them.

Then he wanted to touch them and see what they felt like.

Finally he decided he liked them, and promptly tried to pull their beaks off.

First Birthday

Joey had his first birthday on July 25th, although his birthday party wasn't until August 2nd (after the NC Bar was over so Brian could actually come to the birthday party too). All of Joey's grandparents were able to come down for the occasion, and Joey had a blast, especially being the center of 6 people's attention.

Maybe next year we'll do a better job of getting pictures with everyone!

Hawaii

Now that we have a working camera AND a working computer, I am finally able to blog again. Here are some pictures from our recent trip to Hawaii (in August). We were very fortunate to have family there (which was of course our real reason for the visit). First we went to the Polynesian Cultural Center.

Graduation

After 3 long years, Brian graduated from law school. We are all very proud of him, especially Joey.

We took pictures at the Sarah Duke Gardens. Joey loved Brian's tassel. Most of the time, we were trying to keep him from ripping the cap off Brian's head.

Joey will be an adorable graduate in about 18 years!

Meet the Mets

Brian is a HUGE Mets fan(even though they tend to blow the division title weeks before the end of the regular season). I, however, am a big Braves fan. We've been trying to figure out which team Joey will go for. As we live in North Carolina, I'll probably win. In an effort to help Brian out a little bit, Joey's grandparents gave Joey the most adorable Mets outfit.

Our State Fair is a Great State Fair

Yesterday we went to the NC State Fair. We all had lots of fun and actually managed to get our first picture of us all together as a family.
Of course NASCAR had to be involved in it somehow! Actually, it was more of the National Guard being involved. Anyway, as you can tell, Joey was asleep for a vast majority of our time there. All the excitement from seeing real live cows, ducks, and geese just wore him out! But we got some wonderful pictures so he can relive all the fun later.This is Joey and me at the lighthouse. Its near the old Grist Mill where you can get free hushpuppies! Joey was hoping for his first hushpuppy, but we didn't think he was quite old enough.We also were able to see Smokey the Bear. He would tell you hello when you walked up and wave at you if you waved back. He had a remarkably Southern accent for a forest ranger!
We knew Joey would want a picture beside Cookie Monster, since they have similar eating habits. The sun was a little too bright for Joey . . it's hard to nap with the sun shining in your eyes!We saw Clifford next . . . .Then a picture with the Cookie Monster AND Elmo.Next we went to the National Guard booth. We got this picture with the tank (incidentally the only picture we have from the fair with Joey awake) and the lovely family picture above. Next year Joey wants to do some pull-ups!We went to see the animals next and then Brian and I ate lots of fair food (hint to anyone with a fair headed their way . . . try the fried Reese's peanut butter cups). Lastly we went to see the botanical gardens. We were all VERY tired at this point (I was beginning to wish Brian could carry me around like this) so we decided to head back to the car.We were all very happy when we made it to the car and could drive home. But we had a wonderful time at the fair and hope we'll be able to make it next year from Charlotte.

Weekend at the Farm

We spent last weekend with my parents down in Mt. Olive. While Joey didn't get to see the pigs or chickens yet (he's still a little too young for all that), we did go to the Fall Festival at my mom's elementary school. He also got to see his Great Meana again, and meet his Great G-Daddy for the first time!

Tummy Time

Joey despises tummy time . . . . he's upset that he can't crawl yet. Usually it consists of him crying as he kicks his legs and then cries harder. BUT, as we were doing tummy time the other day, he actually looked pretty cute. And came really close to rolling over. I forget which way is supposed to come first (tummy to back or back to tummy) but I don't think he'll ever want to do back to tummy!

Some of our friends with a baby about 3 months older than Joey gave us some Air Jordan Nike shoes. He's not a big fan of shoes just yet, but they do make him want to be like Mike! (I think he'll have to learn how to stand first, though). Smiling about all the 3-pointers he'll hit just as soon as he can pick up a basketball!

Big Bad Joey

We recently took Joey to his 2-month check-up. We knew he had grown alot, but were still pretty shocked at his size. He is 25 inches long and 15 lbs, 5 ounces. He also got his first set of shots that day, so he didn't feel too well after that. Thankfully that's all over for another 2 months!

Joey is getting quite coordinated as he gets a little older. He's really improved with his hand-eye abilities and is able to hit objects on command now (instead of accidentally). His feet aren't quite up to par with him yet, but they're coming along too.

Even though I no longer work full time, I still do some lectures and other things for Campbell. I usually am able to do my work when Joey is napping.

Unfortunately, he doesn't always take naps where I would prefer (his pack and play)

Joey's Blessing

Joey had his baby blessing last Sunday at church. My parents were able to come up for it, but unfortunately Brian's parents were in Nova Scotia. I was a little concerned that he wouldn't be able to fit in his blessing outfit, but he managed to squeeze in. One more week, and he wouldn't have been able to wear it!

Bath Time

While Joey hasn't always been a fan of bath time, he has definitely started to like it more and more as he gets a little older (and I think it also helps that he can now get in the tub instead of a sponge bath). He's not quite to the splashing phase yet, but he likes to kick his feet in the water, so he is getting there. Bath time goes a little like this:

First we get into the water. As you can see, his arms are always in motion.

Then we get all wet. He's still not quite sure how he feels about that part.

Then we get all sudsy. On Saturdays, we wash our hair. He's just kind of placating me at this point.

Now it's time for Mommy's favorite part . . . . TOWEL TIME!!

I am such a sucker for those little hooded towels. Here he is with his turtle towel. He's just so cute with them, I can't resist.

As you can see, the pacifier usually stays intact. He loves that thing, and it really helps bath time to go much more smoothly.

Last of all, it's time to dry off and change. As you can see, his arms are still in motion.

He eventually calms down enough that I can get a new outfit on. Bath time is one of my favorite times of the day!!

With all the changes that come from having a baby, we've been very grateful that our church doesn't start until 1:00 pm. So, we wait until the last possible minute to get Joey in his church outfit (although Mommy waits until even later in case of spit up). Joey has so many cute church clothes, although this is my personal favorite outfit!!

Joey received the cutest hat during one of his baby showers, and I absolutely love it! I had put it up after the shower and completely forgot about it until the other day. Of course I had to try it on him and get lots of pictures. It's still a little big, but I think incredibly cute.

Just chillin' on the couch.

He's got lots of room to grow with the hat. Sadly, not as much room to grow with his clothes!

Aunt Amy

Aunt Amy left on August 6th to serve a mission for our church in the Toronto East Canada Mission. She is now in Belleville, Ontario and having a great time. Since we don't have any pictures of her as a missionary, we though we'd put some up of her with Joey on the day before she left.
Joey was only 10 days old here. He was SOOOO small!!! He'll look a lot different when she gets home in 18 months!
Here is Amy at the temple just minutes before getting set apart for her mission. Doesn't she just look like a missionary??

Ok, so she doesn't look quite as much like a missionary here, but a girl's got to enjoy her last few minutes of freedom!!

Joey was able to meet his great grandmother (Greatmeana) a few weeks ago. He seemed to really like her since she let him sleep on her lap for several hours. That's his favorite way to take naps!

Hopefully we'll get to visit her again soon. I'm sure G-daddy and Meana will be all for that, since they only live a few minutes away!

Playtime

Joey loves to play with all his toys. He usually starts the day with his aquarium mat . . . .

Then he moves to his swing. Ohh, how he loves those bears (he has a bear mobile)!

All this playing usually tuckers him out, so we take a short break for naptime . . .

After naptime, its time for his rocker chair!!

He really loves those animals. Good thing G-daddy has a farm!!

Joey was born July 25th, 2007. He's really grown a lot in one month! Here's a picture of when he was born (8 lbs, 3 oz).
